Scholarship Created To Honor Long-Time THIMA Member

DocuVoice, LLC has announced the establishment of the THIMA Evelyn Freeman Scholarship Award!  This $1,000 annual scholarship award will become part of the THIMA Scholarship program immediately, and the first recipient will be named this year.  DocuVoice has committed to fund this scholarship for ten years.

In honoring Mrs. Freeman, the principals of DocuVoice, Terry Blount and Bob Stewart, described Mrs. Freeman as a mentor, innovator, and professional role model in the Health Information Management (HIM) profession.   Blount stated, "It is with great pleasure that DocuVoice can honor a person who has contributed so much to so many people as Evelyn Freeman has done over the past 40+ years. She continues to be an example for all of us in Health Information Management and an inspiration for those considering entering the profession."

Based in Tennessee, DocuVoice provides outsourced transcription services, coding services, and dictation and transcription solutions across the Mid-South.

Mrs. Freeman was presented the Meritorious Service Award and honored at the recent THIMA Annual Meeting.

Education News

The five Tennessee community colleges offering A.A.S degrees in Health Information Technology are pleased to announce the new online option for obtaining this degree. This option is available through a collaborative effort between Chattanooga State Community College, Dyersburg State Community College, Roane State Community College, Volunteer State Community College and Walters State Community College.  Graduates will be eligible to sit for the RHIT exam upon successful completion of the degree program. 

Information about the curriculum can be found on the Regents Online Degree Program website at http://www.rodp.org/aasn/hit.htm. Prospective students should contact the program director in your area for more information.

HITECH Act Breach Notification Guidance

On April 17, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published guidance for securing health information and preventing harm from breaches.  This document provides guidance relative to steps that can be taken to limit the harm potentially caused by a breach and, further, defines when covered entities must notify patients that their patient information has been compromised.   The guidance can be read by visiting www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy.
